With the worldwide outbreak of Covid 19 disease in 2019, it has been challenging to understand its transmission. This calls for a better understanding of the population's health to predict and control the disease spread, be it a pandemic or an endemic.

Wastewater carries molecules that correlate to what people consume and how their health is changing. At an individual or household level, toilet waste can tell a lot about the user. For a city, the sewage gives information about the health of its inhabitants. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a way to understand this and may be considered as mining of chemical information from sewage.

Clinical data on the virus infection from a large population relies on extensive sample collection and is commonly restricted to symptom reporting. In a densely populated city, it is harder to monitor and control the disease spread with clinical data alone.

Virus-infected people shed many virus particles into the sewage even before the onset of symptoms. Therefore, a spike in the number of affected individuals and new virus variants can be traced much earlier than the clinical reports. Scientists worldwide have started employing wastewater analysis as an efficient and cost-effective approach for assessing the dynamics of the virus in a population. Several scientific methods are being developed to rapidly decode the message carried by sewage.

Apart from SARS Cov-2, several other pathogens prevailing in a population can be detected through the analysis of wastewater. Techniques for analysis include polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) and mass spectrometry (MS), combined with data analytics.

In this CryptoRelief supported project, data obtained from various wastewater sources and treatment facilities will be analyzed and made available to the public through dashboards. Gradually, this facility will be extended to other parts of India. New human resources developed in the area will be useful in establishing such facilities across the country.

“We intend to help the public, policymakers, practitioners and public health officials combat the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic through wastewater analysis,” says Mr Sandeep Nailwal, Founder CryptoRelief. The fund has successfully been funding several healthcare-related activities in the country.

The benefits of wastewater analysis are endless, including water fingerprinting to study the chemical and biological molecules in it. The WBE project includes aspects such as tracking pollutants, pesticides, licit and illicit drugs to which the population is exposed. WBE will also be employed to detect the emerging issues of concern, such as increasing antimicrobial resistance due to excessive consumption of antibiotics. Identifying the right policies to control pharmaceuticals and personal care products will be of great value in improving public health.

International Centre for Clean Water (ICCW), a non-profit centre created by IIT Madras and housed at the IIT Madras Research Park will be establishing the facility. “Ensuring clean water for people needs a detailed understanding of wastewater” Professor Pradeep, professor in charge of ICCW, a Padma Shri awardee said. The ICCW team will work on building a hydro-informatics platform for the city with appropriate modelling tools to give spatiotemporal information of the data derived from WBE studies.

ICCW has been developing state-of-the-art technologies for affordable clean water. Creating a reliable platform for periodic analysis of wastewater will ensure better water security for the community.

In response to the Covid 2nd wave, 10BedICU was specifically created to work with creating 10 Bedded ICU wards in Government Hospitals in rural and remote districts, so as to handle the severe cases of Covid locally.

The project aims to create a lasting impact on the public health infrastructure by introducing CARE - an open-source healthcare platform from eGovernments Foundation, for pandemic management and tools for efficient utilization and smooth operation of these ICU infrastructures. A new TeleICU module is also being launched to bring in intensivists and other specialists online to help rural patients.

The project is implemented through a PPP model, where the Health Department of the concerned state actively participates in the deployment and continued operation of these ICUs.

Talking about this initiative, Sandeep Nailwal, Founder of Crypto Relief said, “With this project, we aim to set up the infrastructure in collaboration with the government and equip it with an open-source technology platform to ensure access to critical care at Tertiary Level Hospitals.”

“Our contribution does not end at providing ICU equipment to the selected hospitals. We are aware of the fact that our system lacks skilled doctors and specialists to cater to the patients seeking critical care, especially in rural areas. The Tele-ICU feature within CARE software allows the local doctor to work with a specialist at a TeleICU Hub to provide high-quality care to patients in remote hospitals. Features such as hi-res video camera integration and remote monitoring of vitals are all supported in this TeleICU module.

So far, Crypto Relief has supported the project to add 340 ICU Beds with 24 ICU Units in Karnataka and 10 ICU Units in Andhra Pradesh.

About 10BedICU Project

The 10BedICU Project is a joint effort by eGovernments Foundation, Karuna Trust and CoronaSafe Network. The project seeks to set up a 10 bedded ICU unit complete with hybrid ventilators and any other equipment suggested by the concerned health department. The CoronaSafe CARE software is also offered to manage and monitor these ICUs. Tele-ICU clusters are also set up to ensure proper critical care is made available in even the remotest parts of the country.

As of 11th Nov 2021, the project is deployed in Telangana where 400 such ICU beds are live across 40 hospitals. Deployment is underway in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Sikkim, Manipur, Meghalaya, Assam and Nagaland where a total of 1390 ICUs are being set up across 139 hospitals.

Crypto Relief supported the Srujna Charitable Trust who conducted this program in partnership with Covid India Campaign (CIC), a volunteer-driven pan-India disaster support task force, and ICATT Air Ambulance Services. They have successfully conducted the world's largest Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training program across six taluks in Chitradurga district in Karnataka.

This event has been planned as a part of Sharana Sanskriti Utsava in Chitradurga to strengthen healthcare awareness at the grassroots level.

This initiative was planned in three stages.

In the first stage, trainers were trained on September 24, 25, and 26 followed by training of schools and colleges on October 5 in the second stage. As part of stage 3, the rural outreach CPR program began on October 18.

• In the first stage, more than 4,250 trainers from the police department, medical colleges, schools, pharmacy, and ASHA volunteers, bus drivers auto-rickshaw drivers, and pourakarmikas were trained by specialists in emergency medicine in the first phase. Over 1000 manikins were used in a ratio 1:1 training. These trainers, in turn, will be able to train more people from the community.

  

• In the second stage, students from over 200 high schools, PU colleges, and degree colleges (both private and government) were trained. Over 1500 trainers and volunteers, including medical students, interns, doctors and nurses, pharmacists, and dental college students were sent to over 210 different locations across Chitradurga.

The outreach provided hands-on CPR training to over 28,700 students which broke the existing world record of 28,583 in a single day!

• Stage 3 aims to train a further three lakh people over the next couple of weeks from the district which was officially launched last week. The teams comprise doctors/medical students/community health officers, ASHA volunteers led by the GP members, and PHC doctors. The training program is being telecast live. This will be done by reaching out to all the GPs with the required manikins, handouts, and trained trainers to impart the knowledge to the community.

GiveIndia’s ‘Vaccinate India Programme’ was launched by the Vice President of India, Venkaiah Naidu, in Bengaluru in August 2021. As part of the initiative, GiveIndia provides equitable access to the poor and at-risk groups by partnering with various organisations and hospitals in Karnataka. In the first phase, the programme aims to vaccinate approximately 2,50,000 people.

Now, this transaction prompted panic among some investors, contributing to an over 35% drop in SHIB’s price on that Wednesday — and its value continues to fluctuate.

This transaction was huge, and there were mixed opinions on what to do. There was a huge discussion on the Discord channel of Crypto Relief, whether to sell the coins immediately and take out whatever value it generates or act responsibly and protect the retail investors, as the previous approach could have dented the market.

Sandeep Nailwal, Founder of Crypto Relief, mentioned on Twitter that “We will not do anything which hurts any community especially the retail community involved with $SHIB. We will act responsibly!”

Later that day, Evgeny - CEO at Wintermute proposed on Twitter that they would like to help with the steady liquidation of the $SHIB tokens.

Sandeep created a poll and asked the community to vote whether Wintermute be assigned to handle the $SHIB donations. Now, this poll resulted in 2312 votes in total with 67.5% voting YES.

We announced that we’ll be working with Wintermute on this, and 10% of received SHIB tokens, 5,069,730,758,910 SHIB, were transferred to them. Within 72 hours Wintermute was able to sell this lot, resulting in total proceeds of 82,861,797 USDC.

The Viral genome sequencing lab, once functional, will focus on SARS-Cov-2 virus studies. These include continuous surveillance and tracking of the virus mutants and variants. The expanded Viral BSL3 will support research on assessment of the virulence, and cross-reactive immunity of SARS-CoV-2 mutants and variants of concern in cell culture and animal models.

IISc’s Centre for Infectious Disease Research has been actively engaged in COVID-19 RT PCR diagnosis in collaboration with the Government of Karnataka and the Government of India. So far over 100,000 samples collected by government agencies have been tested and reported to ICMR.

"The new Viral genome sequencing facility will be a great addition to the centre and will enhance the ongoing efforts to better understand SARS-Cov-2 virus evolution and its impact on our health," said Dr Ram Turaga - IISc Bengaluru.

Ensuring access to reliable and quality health care infrastructure to all is critical to poverty alleviation and equitable development. As the country continues to fight against the pandemic, the Ministry of Health and the SELCO Foundation has taken up one of the largest programs for upgrading public health facilities with solar energy.

Through this initiative in the first phase sustainable solar energy solutions and efficient medical equipment will be integrated across 1278 healthcare facilities in 10 chosen districts within states of Karnataka, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Odisha. The solar energy would be used to strengthen immunization, maternal and child care, as well as basic diagnostics and critical care. Energy efficiency drive in these facilities will optimise the solar energy requirement and reduce energy consumption by 50-60%. The initiative will directly impact a population of more than 5.7 million people that depend on the public health value chain across the 10 districts.

With improved energy reliability and access, the interventions will help reduce out-of-pocket expenses for end-users, improve staff retention levels especially in remote and vulnerable contexts, change end-user perceptions on the value of public health facilities, increasing footfalls and usage. The program will be a collaboration between Government agencies, Health facilities and staff and Health sector NGOs to ensure better delivery of health care.

The Program is being funded by Crypto Relief, which was set up to provide healthcare and essentials to those fighting for survival against COVID-19. In the past 4 months, the fund has attracted more than USD 440 mn and is working closely with partner organizations NGOs, and hospitals in order to support the Government of India’s efforts in responding to the pandemic.

Under the agreement, UNICEF India will procure Re-Use Prevention (RUP) syringes from syringe manufacturers across the world through a global tendering process. To maintain quality, only WHO Pre-Qualified manufacturers will be asked to participate in the tender. Based on the global tender results, UNICEF will place orders with eligible bidders across the globe. The syringes are expected to be delivered between September 2021 and January 2022.

“India’s COVID-19 vaccination drive is one of the largest in the world aiming to vaccinate over 994 million people above the age of 18 years. In this massive endeavour, as many syringes as vaccines are required to keep up the fight to contain the pandemic,” said Dr Yasmin Haque, UNICEF India Representative. “We are bringing UNICEF’s expertise in procuring and delivering syringes to support India to fast-track vaccinations. Containing the pandemic will also help prevent the disruptions children are facing in education, in accessing health, routine immunization and nutrition services, along with ensuring safety and protection concerns.”

This procurement will add to the ongoing efforts by the Government of India to secure the maximum number of vaccine doses and syringes to fast-track the COVID-19 vaccination drive in the country. Currently, the Government of India has administered over 570 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines and the syringes will be helpful in continuing present efforts.

India is the second country to cross the 570 million mark in 216 days after China.

The Re-Use Prevention (RUP) syringes being procured by UNICEF India get locked after a single use and help to prevent misuse, and therefore prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
